Koi Fish Farm

About Our Koi Journey

Koi fish, scientifically known as Cyprinus rubrofuscus, are one of the most celebrated and culturally significant ornamental fish species in the world. They belong to the carp family, and over centuries, selective breeding has transformed them into a spectrum of vibrant colours, patterns, and body shapes. Koi fish are deeply respected in Asian cultures, especially in Japan, China, Korea, and increasingly in Western countries, where they symbolize prosperity, perseverance, and harmony.
Koi fishes originally evolved from the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), which is native to Eastern Europe and Asia. Early carp were plain, dull golden or brown-coloured river fish commonly used as a food source.
The transformation from plain carp into colourful koi began in China nearly 2,500 years ago, where early farmers noticed naturally occurring colour mutations. However, the art of koi breeding truly flourished in Niigata Prefecture, Japan, in the early 19th century.

The transformation from plain carp into colourful koi began in China nearly 2,500 years ago, where early farmers noticed naturally occurring colour mutations. However, the art of koi breeding truly flourished in Niigata Prefecture, Japan, in the early 19th century.
Japanese rice farmers living in mountainous areas kept carp in irrigation ponds. Over time, they began selecting carp with unusual colour patches:
• Red markings
• White skin
• Blueish tint
• Metallic shine

In Japan, koi represent:
• Strength (swimming upstream)
• Determination
• Success
• Good fortune
• Longevity
• Love & commitment (paired koi)

The famous “Koi Gate Legend” says:

“A koi that swims upstream and leaps the Dragon Gate waterfall transforms into a dragon.” This story became a metaphor for perseverance and success.
